Posted July 31, 2018 2:52 PM

If you're reading this article in Willoughby, OH, then you probably care about your vehicle and how it runs. Even though you care, there is still that moment of dread when your professional service advisor at Lakeside Certified Auto tells you the manufacturer recommends some additional service. Your heart beats a little faster, your blood pressure rises. You worry about spending more money than you had planned. And you worry that if you say "no," you might be harming your vehicle or risking your family's safety.

At the risk of sounding like your dad, you really should have done your homework. Service recommendations are in your owner's manual. But it is not like you want to keep your vehicle auto maintenance schedule on your nightstand for bedtime reading.

Vehicles are complicated machines and it takes some effort for Willoughby residents to keep them running well. That is why they have maintenance schedules that explain how to keep your vehicle performing efficiently and prevent breakdowns. In a typical owner's manual you'll find: oil change, brake fluid and pad change, coolant system service, transmission service, battery electrolyte levels, cables and terminals, tire pressure and wear, CV boots, cabin air filter, air conditioning, heater, fuel filter, air filter, belts and hoses, power steering fluid, differential service, fuel system cleaning and wheel alignment. And then there are mechanical service requirements like timing belt changes, valve adjustment, steering function, engine and exhaust leaks - yeah, it is a really long list!

Fortunately, this isn't a test: Willoughby residents don't need to have it memorized. Your friendly advisor at Lakeside Certified Auto has access to your manufacturer's recommendations. Don't be surprised when your service advisor at Lakeside Certified Auto reminds you something is due. Your manufacturer has taken great care in putting together your maintenance schedule. Let Lakeside Certified Auto help you stay on top of maintenance. You can expect them to suggest recommended services and tell you what problems they find under the hood. Steering Clear in Willoughby

Posted July 22, 2018 3:19 PM

Those who know vehicles believe the steering system may be the most vital component of them all. Perhaps you've found over the years your steering has gotten loose. Or maybe suddenly, your steering wheel has gotten very hard to turn. Let's steer you in the direction of understanding why this may be happening.

First, loose steering. This can likely be the result of wear and tear on the components that connect the steering mechanism with the wheels. Those parts can be ball joints, Pitman arms or tie rods. These parts take a lot of abuse on the road, thanks to railroad tracks, potholes, uneven surfaces: you name it. It's important that they be checked regularly and maintained at Lakeside Certified Auto.

Second, the hard-to-turn wheel. Virtually all vehicles on the road have power steering. There are a couple of different types, though, so let's deal with each. By the way, when they fail, your vehicle's steering can suddenly go from easy peasy to really hard to control.

Some vehicles have hydraulic power steering. It uses a hydraulic fluid that can either leak out or become contaminated. When that happens, you can lose that power assist. There's also a belt involved, and if it becomes worn, stretched or cracked (or even breaks), you'll find yourself struggling with the wheel. If you hear a loud whine coming from the area in the engine compartment when you are steering, that could mean your power steering pump is failing. The best way to avoid these problems is regular maintenance.

Recently, manufacturers have been using electric power steering systems that have some advantages over hydraulic systems. They have electric motors that—like everything mechanical—can fail. Sometimes a fuse to the power steering motor will blow, but simply replacing the fuse often doesn't get to the root cause of the problem. A Lakeside Certified Auto technician can evaluate the system and recommend a solution.

Steering issues are all about safety and should be addressed as soon as possible. When you tell your service advisor, try to be specific about the signs and symptoms. It's one way to steer clear of trouble on the road.

Automotive Tips from Lakeside Certified Auto: Rotor Problems

Posted July 16, 2018 8:14 AM

The brake rotor, or disc, is attached to your wheel. The brake pads rub on the rotor to slow your car when you are driving in Willoughby.

Rotors can warp, crack or become misaligned. They can also be damaged by worn out brake pads that scratch grooves into the surface. These conditions result in less contact surface for the brake pads, leaving you with reduced braking power.

Over time and miles, rotors can also wear down below safe specifications. It is important for Willoughby drivers to know that simply replacing brake pads on a wheel with a bad rotor will not solve the problem. Depending on their condition, rotors may be resurfaced or replaced.

Brake noise or a pulsation in the brake pedal are signs of potential brake problems that should be addressed right away. If you have any brake concerns, please have your friendly and professional Lakeside Certified Auto tech perform a thorough inspection.

Relax When the Wind Blows in OH: Winter Car Prep for Willoughby Drivers

Posted July 10, 2018 11:31 AM

When autumn comes around in Willoughby, leaves fall, nights get longer and there's a definite nip in the air. Time to unpack the boots and gloves and fold some extra blankets onto the beds. It's also time for Willoughby drivers to winterize their vehicles.

Here is some expert auto advice for Willoughby drivers on what vehicles need to keep everyone safe and rolling throughout the OH winter months.

1. Check your antifreeze. Top it off or change it if necessary. You don't want your radiator, engine or hoses freezing up. If your vehicle isn't generating enough heat to keep you warm, your antifreeze might be low, or you might have a thermostat problem. Either way, you should get it checked out before the full force of OH winter sets in. If you are due for a cooling system service at Lakeside Certified Auto in Willoughby, get that done as well.

2. Check your brakes. The slushy wet conditions of winter increase stopping distances. Ice exacerbates the problem. Your first concern, of course, is to make sure you adapt your driving habits to winter weather: slow down, and give yourself plenty of room to stop. Get your brakes checked at Lakeside Certified Auto and replace any worn pads or other parts. Check your brake fluid. It can accumulate moisture and decrease your stopping power.

3. Test your battery. A battery's cranking power drops in the cold, so if your battery is already weak, the onset of winter will do it in. The last thing you want is to be on a snowy OH road in the dark and cold with a dead battery.

4. Pack emergency supplies. Toss a blanket into the trunk. If you do find yourself stranded, your first concern will be to stay warm. If you're traveling away from OH population centers, then pack some emergency food and water as well. Also, it's a good idea to top off your tank in winter. That way, if you get stuck, you'll have some fuel to burn to stay warm, and it'll keep your gas lines from freezing up.

5. Check your wiper blades. They may be able to handle a light Willoughby summer rain shower, but they might not be up to the ice and snow that collect on a windshield in winter. If you experience particularly harsh winters or really wet ones, you can purchase special blades that resist freezing. And don't forget to top off your wiper fluid.

6. Check your tires. Tires lose pressure over time, but they lose pressure fast when it's cold outside in Willoughby. Tires lose about one pound of pressure every six to eight weeks; they also lose one pound of pressure for every 10°F/5.6°C drop in temperature. If the last time you checked your tires it was 80°F/26.7°C outside and it's 40°F/4.4°C now, your tires could be down five pounds in pressure — and that's serious. It's a safety issue and cuts down on your fuel economy.

7. Driving conditions in the Willoughby area may warrant special winter tires. Check with your friendly and knowledgeable Lakeside Certified Auto tire professional to get the right tires for your area and for your driving habits. If you are getting winter tires, it's always best to get them for all four wheels. But if you're only going to get two, put them on the rear wheels, even if you drive a front-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. Traction is more important on the rear of a vehicle if you want to prevent sliding or fish-tailing on slick surfaces.

So there you have it: a quick checklist to winterize your car in OH. When it comes to car care, preventive maintenance is always the best practice for Willoughby drivers, especially when it comes to winter weather. None of us want to be caught out in the winter cold.

Power Steering Service at Lakeside Certified Auto in Willoughby

Posted July 1, 2018 12:01 PM

Many Willoughby drivers have been hearing about technological advances in power steering, specifically electric power steering. Some very high-end cars have been featuring electric power steering. Power steering fluid has the necessary hydraulic properties and the ability to lubricate the internal parts. The power steering fluid also protects vehicle components from rust and corrosion.

Willoughby car owners should be aware that vehicle manufacturers recommend that the fluid be replaced on schedule. At Lakeside Certified Auto, the old fluid is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly. Fresh fluid is then installed.

Unfortunately, many Willoughby drivers don't realize how important it is to service their power steering, and some may not even know that it's necessary in the first place. A neglected power steering system can develop leaks that will shorten the life of the pump.

Willoughby drivers should be aware of warnings that indicate possible power steering problems: the need to constantly add power steering fluid, a loud whining from the pump, erratic power assist or high steering effort. If you're experiencing any of these problems, have your power steering checked out at Lakeside Certified Auto in Willoughby.

In addition to the pump and hydraulic system, there are mechanical parts in the steering system. The rods, arms, joints and knuckles that actually turn the wheels can become worn or damaged. A standard alignment service at Lakeside Certified Auto includes an inspection of steering components.

See if you notice any of these: play in the steering wheel, the steering wheel is off center, or there's a noise coming from your front wheels, especially when turning.  If so, have your friendly and knowledgeable Lakeside Certified Auto service advisor do an inspection so the problem can be corrected. Waiting too long could cause uneven tire wear and may even lead to steering failure.

I had my car towed to this shop, and they had it fixed by the very next day! Josh kept me updated throughout the process, explaining the issue and costs clearly, which I really appreciated. I decided to go here because both my mom and my husband have used them before and were very happy and now I can see why! Excellent service, great communication, and quick turnaround. Highly recommend!

First experience with Lakeside was today. Dropped my car off at 8 am (scheduled) for 4 new tires and I already have the car back as of 3. Thus far everything is great! Thank you!

I highly recommend this place. I needed a new transmission and I took my car here. They fixed it on Monday and got to pick it up Tuesday (so they can drive it to make sure everything was good with it). I will definitely be coming here when I need something done on my car. The price wasn't to bad either.

Shawn was honest with me. I took my car into them because I heard a noise and thought I needed a strut. It was missing a nut in a plastic cover. No charge! I’ll go back again when I need something.
